Common Web site Problems
Don't fall into these traps:

Everyone is doing it.

Make sure a good Web site fits your strategy. A good site is useful for visitors and supports the buying process.  Evaluate your need for a site.  What are the objectives for your site?  If you have no concrete objectives, a site is probably not an effective allocation of valuable resources.

Well that's done. On to something else!

A Web site is a commitment to developing and maintaining your customer relationships.  The web itself constantly changes and this requires continuous development of your site as well.  With the right commitment, your site will benefit both your company and your customer.

Failure to look ahead!

Many sites are designed with finite resources and thinking.  Then when new pages or features are needed, the site has to be completely reconstructed. Design your site for expansion.  "This Web site is always under construction", is a good attitude to maintain.

Dazzle them and they'll buy stuff!

Don't load up the site with audio, beautiful graphics, and animation.  The problem: current browser versions lack the appropriate technical support, and limited bandwidth makes for slow loads.  Stick to the basics.  Give your visitors what they're looking for, and make it easy for them.  Dazzle them with service.

Text overload!

Reading text on a monitor is hard on the eyes.  Keep it brief.  Tight editing is challenging, but necessary.

Extraneous information!

Some companies are so proud of their sites they include anecdotes, cute stories about employees, pictures of facilities, even clever poems written by the CEO!  Don't self-aggrandize!  Keep your site relevant to customer issues.

Sloppy sites!

Typos, bad grammar, run on sentences, unintelligible graphics, irrelevant links and bad links are too common.  Don't annoy visitors or make yourself look bad.

Failure to support the company (look)!

Feature logos, typefaces, and graphics that appear on other customer communications.  Don't confuse visitors.  Use trademarks, and protect them.  Recent case law extends trademark protection to the Web.

Failure to make the site interactive!

This is your chance to get feedback. Build customer relationships. You can't do this if you don't ask questions.  Find out why your customers are there so you can help them.

Your site doesn't need to be perfect, but it needs to be good.  Build your site in phases.  Update it frequently.  Make it work for your customers.
